ELAC baseball loses series to No. 9 Warriors

MONTEREY PARK, CA — After opening a three-game series against El Camino College with a 6-4 win last Tuesday, East Los Angeles College baseball team lost 4-3 in 12 innings to SoCal's No. 9-ranked team today.

ELAC also lost to the Warriors 5-3 on Thursday. As a result, ELAC, who is 6-9 overall and 1-2 in South Conference play, is tied for sixth place in the standings with El Camino-Compton Center (1-8, 1-2). El Camino (11-5, 2-1) stands in second place.

El Camino scored first in the one-run win today in the first inning from two hits, one a double. In the bottom of the first, ELAC loaded the bases with no outs.

Sophomore shortstop Shun Tsunoda (HH Wilson HS) singled, sandwiched between freshman center fielder Anthony Bocanegra (Burroughs HS) being hit by a pitch and sophomore first baseman Larson Anzaldo (St. Paul HS) walk.

The Huskies succumbed to three-consecutive strikeouts from Warrior freshman pitcher Taylor Rashi and did not score.

El Camino scored a run in the top of the fifth inning, ELAC answered in the bottom of the inning with three hits and two runs.

Tsunoda doubled, Anzaldo singled, and then freshman designated hitter Travis Mcfarland (Norco HS) grounded out to third base with ELAC's first RBI. Freshman right fielder Alex Carrillo (West Covina HS) singled and tied the game at two-all.

EL Camino went ahead 3-2 in the top of the seventh inning. ELAC rallied to tie the score in the bottom of the eighth. Bocanegra singled, Tsunoda reached first on an error by Warrior third baseman Zack Ferreira.

ELAC sophomore pitcher Steve Romo (El Dorado HS) grounded out to second base and his RBI evened the score at 3-3 in the eighth.

In the top of the 12th inning, ELAC had three errors and El Camino scored an unearned run and took a 4-3 lead. Warrior sophomore pitcher Nick Sablock retired the side and ELAC lost a heartbreaker.

ELAC freshman pitcher Alberto Lopez (Southeast HS), who pitched for four innings, got the loss.  Romo pitched seven innings for the Huskies sophomore Julian Vizcarra (El Rancho HS) pitched one inning.

In the win against El Camino on Tuesday, the Huskies scored two runs in the third inning and three runs in the fourth and held on for the win.

In the third inning, Bocanegra singled, stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball and freshman second baseman Zackery Rojo (Northview HS) scored unearned. Anzaldo doubled and ELAC scored two runs.

ELAC opened the bottom of the fourth inning with two walks to freshman catcher Ismael Martinez (Ramona HS) and sophomore right fielder Evan Holmes (Warren HS). Bocanegra singled in a RBI and Tsunoda hit a 2-RBI double.

EL Camino pulled within one, down 5-4 after six-and-a-half innings. The Huskies added one more run in the bottom of the seventh. Sophomore left fielder Mel Robles (St John Bosco HS) singled in that inning.

Freshman pitcher Alex Carrillo (West Covina HS), who pitched for 5.2 innings, earned the win for ELAC.  Freshman pitcher Richard Escobedo (Northview HS) recorded the save. He pitched the last frame.

The Huskies play a three-game series against Los Angeles Harbor College, March 15-19. The lone home game in the series will be on Thursday, March 17 at 6 p.m.
