WILMINGTON, CA — The East Los Angeles College baseball team won two of three games against Los Angeles Harbor College to win its first South Coast Conference three-game series.
The Huskies won 11-4 at Harbor today, defeated the Seahawks 3-1 on Thursday and lost 7-1 on Tuesday to the Seahawks. Harbor was No. 15-ranked on Tuesday in the CCCAA Baseball Coaches SoCal Poll.
As a result of winning its first SCC series, ELAC, 8-10 overall and 3-3 in the SCC, vaulted from sixth place in the conference standings into a fourth place tie with Harbor (7-11, 3-3).
In the seven-run slugfest win today, ELAC scored in the top of the first inning off two hits, a single from center fielder Anthony Bocanegra (Burroughs HS) and an RBI-single from third baseman Ryan Viramontes (West Covina HS). Harbor then added three runs, two in the first and one in the third.
ELAC rallied and tied the score at 3-3 in the top of the fourth off four Husky hits. Second baseman Zackery Rojo (Northview HS) and catcher Michael Luna (Arcadia HS) each singled. Bocanegra and shortstop Shun Tsunoda (HH Wilson HS) each singled in a RBI.
ELAC scored three runs from five singles in the eighth inning. Husky singles were from Bocanegra, Tsunoda, Viramontes (two RBIs) and pitcher Alberto Lopez (Southeast HS) who also pitched the final two innings.
In addition, Husky right fielder Anthony Mayorga (Chatsworth HS) singled and loaded the bases. ELAC left fielder Anthony Cuevas (Los Altos HS) was hit by a pitch and Viramontes scored.
ELAC led 7-4 heading into the ninth inning, but the Huskies power hitting had not ended. The Huskies would add four runs off three hits in the ninth. ELAC ended with 20 hits to Harbor’s 13.
Bocanegra led the Huskies slam fest with five hits. ELAC pitcher Steve Romo (El Dorado HS) hit the games only homerun. Shortstop Julian Villegas lead the Seahawks with three hits. Romo pitched seven innings and recorded the win for ELAC.
In two-run 3-1 win at ELAC, Harbor scored a run in the top of the first inning. Seahawk freshman center fielder Alec Ojeda walked. ELAC sophomore pitcher George Alamillo (LA Marshall HS) followed with getting two outs, including one strike. Harbor catcher Joseph Argumedo then doubled a RBI and the Seahawks led 1-0.
ELAC rallied in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the score at 1-all. After sophomore first baseman Larson Anzaldo (St. Paul HS) walked, two Huskies singled. Viramontes and designated hitter Alex Carrillo (West Covina HS) each singled to load the bases.
Mayorga reached first on a Harbor error. Anzaldo scored unearned. ELAC left three on base when the inning ended.
After a one out in the bottom of the seventh inning, ELAC sophomore Tsunoda singled. Romo, who was ELAC’s shortstop in this game, reached first on a fielder's choice and Tsunoda was out at second. Anzaldo walked. Viramontes singled in an RBI for a 2-1 ELAC lead. Carrillo walked to load the bases. Mayorga singled an RBI and ELAC led 3-1, which was the final score.
ELAC outhit Harbor 10-8. Carrillo led the Huskies with three singles. Bocanegra singled twice as did Viramontes. Powering one hit each for the Huskies were Anzaldo who had two RBIs, Mayorga and Tsunoda. Argumedo led Harbor with a double and two singles.
Alamillo got the win for ELAC while pitching the full nine innings. He threw four strikeouts.
ELAC plays in the Allan Hancock College Spring Break Classic in Santa Maria next week March 22-24.
