SANTA MARIA, CA — The East Los Angeles College baseball team lost two 10 inning one-run games in the Allan Hancock College Spring Classic, 3-2 to No. 4-ranked Merced College today and 10-9 to the host Bulldogs on Tuesday.
The Huskies also lost 13-4 to No. 8 College of the Canyons yesterday in tournament play.
Merced scored first with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning from Curtis Kellogg's 2-RBI single. ELAC tied the score, 2-2, in the top of the sixth inning off a single and two doubles.
ELAC pitcher Alberto Lopez (Southeast HS) then pitched 3.2 scoreless innings; however, Merced got two hits in the bottom of the 10th inning for the win. Second baseman Asaka Hashimoto tripled and a third baseman Richy Mena hit a single with an RBI.
ELAC won the hitting battle against Merced, nine to six. Viramontes singled four times to lead the Huskies. Kellogg led Merced with three hits.
In the 10-9 loss to Hancock College, ELAC went ahead 8-5 in the top of the eighth inning off second baseman Johnny Salgado's (Whittier HS) 2-RBI single. Hancock right fielder Colby Barrick slammed a three-run homer that tied the game in the bottom of the eighth.
Hancock's Jacob Tonascia delivered a walk-off single in the tenth to hand ELAC a heartbreaking loss.
ELAC was outhit 19-11. Mayorga and catcher Ismael Martinez (Ramona HS) led the Huskies bats with three singles each. Viramontes hit a one-run homerun in the second inning. Barrick led Hancock who added a triple and two singles to his 3-run homerun blast.
ELAC pitcher Julian Vizcarra (El Rancho HS) pitched 4.2 innings threw seven strikeouts.
In the loss to Canyons, ELAC was only outhit 16-14, but Cougar left fielder Chad Bible timely four hits included two home runs and seven RBI's.
Bocanegra led the Husky bats with four hits; Viramontes and Romo each singled twice with three RBI's for Viramontes, and Mayorga tripled in an RBI.
ELAC resumes South Coast Conference play with the first of a three-game series against No. 12 Cerritos College (11-7, 4-2) on Tuesday, March 29 at home beginning at 6 p.m.
The Huskies play on the Falcons turf on Thursday, March 31 at 2:30 p.m. and close the series with a home game on Saturday April 2 at noon.
