Huskies’ baseball begins with 6-4 win

PALM DESERT, CA — The East Los Angeles College baseball team opened the season with a 6-1 rally to record a 6-4 win at College of the Desert today.

Desert took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning from a two-out, one-hit aided by two Husky errors.

The Huskies quieted down the home crowd in the next inning with five consecutive hits. With one out, freshman first baseman Oscar Osorio (Charter Oak High School) homered to right field for the first ELAC hit of the season. ELAC was down 3-1. The Husky noise echoed.

Freshman right fielder Elias Maldonado (Northview HS) followed with a single to left field.

Freshman designated hitter Thomas Acuna (Pomona HS) then doubled to center field and Maldonado advanced to third.

Freshman third baseman Matthew Sosa (Whittier HS) singled to right field (RBI) and Acuna advanced to third. ELAC was within a run, down 3-2. Sophomore catcher Ismael Martinez (Riverside Ramona HS) doubled to center field (RBI) and the Huskies tied the score, 3-3.

The Huskies scored one run each in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings and led 6-3. Desert scored a run with one out in the bottom of the ninth. ELAC freshman pitcher Brett Porter (Arcadia HS) followed with two outs and got the save.

ELAC sophomore pitcher Alex Carrillo (West Covina HS) got the win. He pitched 4.2 innings and had five strikes.

Martinez added a single to his double and led the Husky bats with two hits and two RBIs Sophomore center fielder Morgan Lomax (Gardena Serra HS) and freshman left fielder Jonathan Max (Burroughs HS) added one single each for the Huskies.

ELAC continues their road trip with a game at Mt. San Jacinto College tomorrow, with a 1 p.m. start time.
