MONTEREY PARK, CA. — The East Los Angeles College baseball team won its second straight home game, 3-0, over Mt. San Jacinto College in a rematch won by the Huskies last week, 2-1.
With the victory, the Huskies improve to 6-0 overall. A win against No. 20 (South Region) Citrus College (2-2) next Thursday at 2 p.m., will match last season’s 7-0 start. The Huskies defeated Citrus 10-3 two days ago.
ELAC scored all of its runs in the seven-hit win in the bottom of the second inning.
After an out, freshman first baseman Bryan Duenas (Warren High School) singled. After another out, sophomore catcher Matthew Shults (South Pasadena HS) singled preceded by a walk to freshman second baseman Andy Rodriguez (Walnut HS).
A bases-loaded walk to freshman left fielder Ruben Hernandez (Walnut HS) put ELAC on the board and the Huskies led 1-0.
Freshman short stop Grant Victor (St. Francis HS) singled in two RBIs and ELAC led 3-0.
Mt. San Jacinto scattered five hits during the first seven innings. Freshman third baseman Trae Erikson (Murrieta Mesa HS) led Victor Valley with two hits. Freshman pitcher Steve Silvas (Hemet / West Valley HS) took the loss and struck out four in seven innings of work.
Sophomore Steven Nuno (Warren HS) was the winning pitcher and stands 2-0 for the season for ELAC. His record is the best in the state tied with 28 other pitchers, which includes teammate Zechariah ‘Zech’ Jarrard (Temple City HS).
Nuno struck out four in six innings on the mound. ELAC freshman pitcher Luis Ramos (Venice HS) got his first save. He faced nine batters in three innings, gave up on hit, struck out one and retired the side in the eighth and ninth innings.
Designated hitter Jarrard led the Husky bats with two hits. Five Huskies each singled, Victor (2 RBIs), Hernandez (RBI), Duenas, Shults and freshman center fielder Troy Maki (Mark Keppel HS).
Maki stole second base in the fifth inning. He has seven stolen bases, which is the seventh best in the state.
The Huskies host Citrus College on Thursday, Feb. 8 at 1 p.m.
