Huskies Face First Opponent in Two Years in Preseason Scrimmage
by Cerwin D. Haynes
It was Saturday, November 2, 2019...
This date was the last time the East Los Angeles College Huskies faced an opponent on their home field, a 44-28 victory over Bakersfield College.
Of course, we all know by now why that was the case. So tonight marked a significant milestone for the return of ELAC Football as they faced the Southwestern College Jaguars in a preseason scrimmage. Although there were no scores and stats to count, what did count was the experience of finally getting to line up against another team and getting a taste of real-time game action.
A total of three "quarters" were played, with the first two - set to 12 minutes - beginning with scripted PAT and field goal tries for the teams (ELAC converted on all their kicks). Afterward, the teams would run actually plays with the QBs wearing the yellow jerseys for protection. The third "quarter" saw an audible: originally set to 12 minutes, the teams decided to play a full 15-minute quarter with full contact and penalties called.
Overall, Head Coach Bobby Godinez was pleased with the team's performance. The defense had two interceptions and kept the Jags out of the end zone. The offense "scored" three touchdowns: the first two were corner fade routes to the back of the end zone caught by 6' 2" TE Joseph Ibarra, who had a height advantage on his defender.
The third TD was a long 97- yard QB keeper. Watch the QB fake the handoff, dance up the middle, then take off downfield:
