A veteran on the recruiting trail coach French returned to the top Division II program on the west coast and recruited the 2010 CCAA Freshman of the Year, Jacari Whitfield, after serving as the top assistant at Howard College for the 2008-2009 season and helped the Hawks advance to the Region 5 tournament semi-finals. Coach French played a major role in recruiting the 2009-2010 nationally ranked team as the Howard College Hawks won the NJCAA National Championship.

As an assistant coach at California State University, San Bernardino, where in two seasons with the program, he helped the coyotes advance to their first ever Division II Final Four appearance in 2007, and in 2008 won the CCAA Conference Championship.

Before coming to CSUSB, Coach French served as the head coach at Colorado Northwestern Community College in Region 18 and brought respectability to the program. Additionally, French served as an assistant coach at Tyler Junior College where he was responsible for on-floor coaching, player development and recruiting. The Apaches had five players sign Division I scholarships and earned a spot in the Region 14 tournament. French came to Tyler Junior College from the University of California, Riverside, where he helped recruit and develop the 2003 Big West Freshman of the Year, Nate Carter.

Coach French was the lead assistant at Ventura College and helped develop Desmond Penigar, who was the 2003 Big West Conference Tournament MVP and was the 2004 NBDL Rookie of the Year. From 1999-2000, Coach French served as an assistant to Ernie Kent at the University of Oregon and helped guide the Ducks to a third place finish in the PAC-10 with an overall record of 22-8 and advanced to the 1st Round of the NCAA tournament. He worked with NBA Draftee Bryan Bracey, who was taken in the second round by the San Antonio Spurs, and Fred Jones, who was taken in the first round by the Indiana Pacers.

French earned his Bachelor's degree in Kinesiology from CSUSB and holds a Master's degree in Physical Education from Azusa Pacific University.
