ELAC softball wins 17-4 and 8-6

MONTEREY PARK, CA — In the first week of the season, the East Los Angeles College softball team won 8-6 today vs. Los Angeles Mission College, won 17-4 against Golden West College on Tuesday and lost 9-0 loss to Santa Ana College yesterday.

In the Mission win, the Huskies survived three errors and being outhit 9-5 with timely offense.

Mission went up 5-0; then the Huskies rallied for four runs in the bottom of the third inning.

Down 6-4, ELAC rallied again and scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth for a 7-6 lead and the momentum. ELAC scored an insurance run in the sixth.

Sophomore pitcher Griselda Vasquez held on for the win. Vasquez pitched the final two innings and had one strikeout.

Two of the Husky hits were from sophomore centerfielder Mone’t Manning (RBI) who has slammed a batting average of .405 in three games. Freshman catcher Sandra Vargas had three RBIs.

In the 17-4 opening season win, the Huskies outhit Golden West 16-5. Vargas doubled, singled twice and had three RBIs. Freshman short stop Angelina Gonzalez doubled twice, singled twice with one RBI. Vazquez doubled, singled and had three RBIs.

Vazquez got her first win. She pitched three innings and had two strikeouts. Sophomore pitcher Samantha Alvarado pitched three innings and threw five strikeouts.

Top batters for the week included Vasquez with four hits and four RBIs and Vargas with three hits and six RBIs. Also, Gonzalez with six hits and two RBIs, Manning with four hits and an RBI.

Sophomore Alexis Lazaro singled twice with three RBIs, freshman Destiny Avena singled three times and sophomore Madalyn Roberts singled twice.

The Huskies have six games next week, one at home on Thursday, Feb. 9 against Los Angeles Harbor College at 3 p.m.
