MONTEREY PARK, CA — The East Los Angeles College softball team defeated Chaffey College today 6-5 at home and won the three-game South Coast Conference series against the Panthers.
The Huskies also defeated Chaffey 7-3 at home on March 16, ending the Panthers’ undefeated SCC record at the time. ELAC scored six runs in the top of the seventh inning in a 12-11 loss at Chaffey on April 4, but Chaffey responded with a seven-run rally and the win.
In the victory today, ELAC (17-22) returned the favor. Chaffey (15-22) scored a run in the top of the seventh to break a 4-4 tie and the Huskies fought back with two runs in the bottom of the inning to win the close game.
It was the third game this season that the Huskies won in the bottom of the seventh.
In the other two wins, ELAC scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh and won 5-4 win vs. Imperial Valley College (18-8) on Feb. 11. Against San Bernardino (19-14), ELAC scored a run in the bottom of the seventh to win 3-2 on Feb. 22.
In the victory today, ELAC led 2-0 after the first inning. Chaffey scored three runs in the third inning followed by two Husky runs and ELAC led 4-3 after three innings. Rio Hondo scored a run in the top of the sixth and tied the score 4-4.
Freshman Samantha Alvarado got the win. She pitched the final two innings. Sophomore Griselda Vasquez pitched the first five innings.
The Huskies outhit Chaffey 11-9. Two Huskies doubled, Vasquez who had an RBI and freshman short stop Angelina Gonzalez who also singled and had an RBI. Sophomore Madalyn Roberts singled twice and had an RBI. Andrea Rocha singled twice.
Sophomore centerfielder Mone’t Manning singled in an RBI as did freshmen outfielders Destiny Avena and Ashley Castillo. Alvarado singled.
In the 12-11 loss, Gonzalez, who has a batting average of .398, doubled twice, singled and had three RBIs. Gonzalez has hit 13 doubles this season. Alvarado singled twice (2 RBIs) and Avena, who has 29 hits this season, doubled (RBI).
Huskies that each singled included Roberts (RBI), freshman catcher Sandra Vargas (RBI), freshman outfielder Natalie Acosta and Vasquez.
In the 7-3 win against Chaffey, Avena doubled and singled (RBI), Gonzalez, who pitched the win, singled twice (2 RBIs) and Rocha singled twice with an RBI.
The Huskies close out the season on Tuesday, April 25, with third place in the SCC on the line. ELAC hosts Rio Hondo (10-27) at 5 p.m. with the winner taking third place behind champion Mt. SAC (33-3) and second place finisher Pasadena City College (24-12-1).
