MONTEREY PARK, CA — The East Los Angeles College softball team held their own against state powerhouse El Camino College, who went 37-8 last season, in their third straight Huskies home game today.
ELAC rallied from a 4-0 deficit and pulled within a run, down 4-3 heading into the sixth inning.
El Camino’s bats burst and in the sixth, via three ELAC pitchers, and the Warriors shut the door on the Husky rally. El Camino turned a close game into a 12-3 South Coast Conference crossover win.
El Camino scored four runs in the second inning and led 4-0. ELAC answered with two runs in the bottom of the fourth and another in the fifth inning.
Playing a tough non-conference with some of the top teams in the state helps the Huskies get ready for conference play and a playoff run. In today’s loss, the Huskies smashed seven hits including two doubles.
The ELAC doubles were from sophomore center fielder Mone't Manning (Northview HS), who brought home an RBI, and first baseman Jessica Hernandez (South El Monte HS).
Sophomore short stop Angelina Gonzales (Gabrielino HS) led the Husky bats. She singled twice and added a run batted in.
Sophomore second baseman Destiny Avena (St. Paul HS) singled (RBI) and had a batting average of .500 today. Two other Huskies each singled, sophomore left fielder Dominique De Alba (Bell Gardens HS) and freshman pitcher Majisty Shomo (Alhambra / Century High School).
Shomo (1-1) took the loss, pitched the first 5.2 innings, struck out one and gave up seven runs. Teammate and sophomore pitcher Samantha Alvarado (Edgewood HS) pitched the final third of the sixth inning, struck out one and gave up five runs.
Sophomore catcher Ashley Machado (Warren HS) led El Camino with two singles and three RBIs. The winning pitcher was Clarissa Chiquete who pitched the distance.
The Huskies (2-1) try to get back on track with an away game on Thursday at Los Angeles Harbor College (2-1) in an SCC crossover game.
