RANCHO CUCAMONGA, CA — With their backs to the wall, the East Los Angeles College Huskies softball team stunned Chaffey College 6-4 in South Coast Conference North Division play at Lower Field.
ELAC improves to 20-15 overall and 5-5 in the SCC North. Chaffey (24-13, 6-5) lost the three-games series to ELAC 2-1. The Huskies also won at Chaffey 10-7 on March 1 while Chaffey took the W at ELAC 13-3 on April 3.
With a win today, ELAC knocked Chaffey out of second place contention and remains in playoff contention. The teams are battling for third place in the conference. Pasadena City College (24-13, 7-3), which lost 10-1 to Mt. San Antonio College (30-6, 9-2) today, now has a lock on second place.
The Huskies knocked out a 4-0 first inning lead on six hits, which included a double followed by five straight singles. In the third, Chaffey singled twice and scored two runs.
The final scoring was in the fifth inning. ELAC scored an unearned run in the top of the inning on a single and a Chaffey error. Chaffey answered with two runs on two singles, one unearned from an ELAC error. With a runner in scoring position, freshman pitcher Angelita Villalvazo (Stockton / Edison HS) followed with two quick outs and ended the Chaffey threat.
Villalvazo, who pitched the distance, held Chaffey scoreless in the final two innings for the ELAC win.
Villalvazo earned her third straight victory and stands 3-3 overall. She had two strikeouts and held Chaffey to four hits.
The Huskies slammed 10 hits. Sophomore catcher Destiny Avena (St. Paul HS) and sophomore third baseman Julie Granadeno (LA Marshall HS) led the Husky bats. Each singled twice with one RBI each.
Sophomore short stop Angelina Gonzales (Gabrielino HS) and sophomore designated player Sara Serrano (Baldwin Park / Sierra Vista High School) each singled with one RBI each.
Sophomore left fielder Dominique De Alba (Bell Gardens HS) doubled. Three sophomores each singled—first baseman Jessica Hernandez (South El Monte HS), center fielder Mone't Manning (Northview HS) and second baseman Samantha Alvarado (Edgewood HS).
