MONTEREY PARK, CA — Round 2 of the East Los Angeles College Husky Classic includes semifinal coverage of the championship and consolation semifinals.
No. 18 Saddleback College 62, Moorpark College 50 – Moorpark College (10-7) opened with a 4-0 lead against Saddleback (13-4), but the Gauchos answered with a 19-6 run.
Moorpark outscored Saddleback in the second half, but it was the 26-11 Gaucho scoring outburst in the second frame that was key to the win. Saddleback led 45-25 at halftime and Moorpark got no closer than 11 points.
Three members of each team scored in double figures. For Saddleback, forward Janae Omusi scored a game-high 20 points and had 11 rebounds for her second-straight double double. Guard Laura Tapia scored 16 points and had six assists and four steals. Guard Kara Ito scored 12 points.
Moorpark’s Emma Johnson had a double double with 13 points and 13 rebounds. Two Raider guards scored 12 points each, Elise Munoz-Albanez and Vanessa Desimone. Desimone had six steals.
ELAC 101, LA Harbor College 65 – Harbor (7-9) took a 9-8 lead with 5:47 left in the first, but the Huskies (13-1) rallied for a 17-13 lead by the end of the period. ELAC opened the second quarter with a 10-5 run to lead 27-18. Sophomore guard Tiffani Martinez (Montebello HS) scored on a three-point jump shot, assisted by Allissa Gomez (Roosevelt HS), with 6:24 remaining in the half, which began a 9-0 ELAC run.
The Huskies built a 44-21 lead at the half and had a 40-point lead in the second half. Martinez scored 20 points to help lead the Huskies on offense.
Three Huskies had double doubles, Anastasia Tsybaeva (14 points, 13 rebounds), Katrina Reeves (13 points, 14 rebounds) and Gloria Ortiz (10 points, 10 rebounds).
Harbor played without starting guard Christian Brown who scored in double figures yesterday. Guard Tiffani Lucci scored 21 points and 14 rebounds. Kristina Brown and Tajah Davis each scored 10 points for Harbor and had seven and five assists, respectively.
College of the Canyons 94, University of Antelope Valley JV 88 – Canyons (5-10) rallied for the win after falling behind by 17 points. Antelope Valley JV (0-2) led by double digits for more than seven minutes before taking a 46-35 half lead.
Canyons chipped away at the lead and led 59-58 lead with 2:53 left in the third period. A seesaw battle ensued. The game had eight lead changes and four ties. Canyons led 82-81 with 4:06 remaining in the game and closed out with a 12-6 run for the win.
Canyons outscored Antelope Valley JV 32-22 off fast break points and four Cougars scored in double figures.
Forward Marina Rojas had a triple double (21 points, 19 rebounds, 12 assists); guard Tasi Ramon had a double double (15 points, 11 rebounds), and Cougar guards Gissel Sanchez and Dayna Tanaka scored 24 and 20 points, respectively.
Antelope Valley JV had two with double doubles, Daizah Pounds (26 points, 11 rebounds) and Latique Walton (18 points, 21 rebounds).
Oxnard College 74, Imperial Valley College 44 – Oxnard (3-11) ran out of the gates and built a 23-4 first period lead behind Alexis Moody’s eight points and Kendall Gott’s six. They led the Condors in scoring; Moody scored 27 total points, Gott 14. Teammate Rhonniesha Simpson had a double double (11 points, 15 rebounds and Richell Bequilla had a game-high 20 assists.
Imperial Valley (0-10) came out more aggressive in the third period and connected on 73.3 percent from the charity stripe (11-of-15) to outscore Oxnard 19-15.
Guard Nouly Thaodara scored 16 points for Imperial Valley, forward Carmelita Smith scored seven points and had seven rebounds and forward Roxanna Olivos came off the bench and added seven points and seven rebounds.
Tomorrow’s championships schedule: Oxnard against Canyons for the Consolation Championship at 1 p.m.; Moorpark against Harbor in the Third Place game at 3 p.m. and it’s ELAC against Saddleback in the Husky Classic Championship battle at 5 p.m.
