East Los Angeles College Women's Basketball Team Wins 80-68

CYPRESS, CA —  The East Los Angeles College women’s basketball team won 80-68 over Citrus College in the semifinals of the 34th Annual Lady Charger Classic in Don Johnson Court at Cypress College.  

The No. 12 statewide-ranked (Coaches RPI Poll) Huskies, 6-2 overall, meet No.1 Palomar (9-0) in the Championship Game tomorrow at 3 p.m. Citrus (6-3) meets host Cypress College (2-5) in the Third Place Game at 1 p.m.

Sophomore forward Monica Garcia (Garfield High School) had a double double. She scored a game-high 24 points and locked down 10 rebounds. Garcia averages 18.8 points per game, 14th best in the state.

Two freshmen scored 17 points apiece for ELAC, guard Jaelynn Curley (AZ / Ganado HS) and forward Dominique Godbolt (Fairfax HS).

Godbolt scored her eighth straight double double. She had 13 rebounds and averages 15.4 rebounds per game, third best in the state.

After five lead changes and a tie, Citrus led 14-13 after the first period. The second quarter also included five lead changes and a tie. ELAC outscored Citrus 21-17 backed by Curley’s 12 points.

Citrus led 31-29 when Andrea Bustillos hit a 3-point jump shot with 1:31 left in the second quarter. ELAC then went on an 11-0 run and led 40-31 off a layup from freshman guard Jennifer Pool (Legacy HS), assisted from a dish by Garcia with 8:12 left in the third quarter. 

The Huskies shot 50 percent from the field (9-of-18) in the fourth period while Citrus struggled to 5-of-15 field goals. ELAC sophomore guard Destinee Anaya (TX / MacArthur HS) and Garcia each scored six points in the final quarter. 

Sharper on defense, ELAC had 15 steals to 8 for Citrus. Five of those steals came from Godbolt and three were from Curley. Key for the Huskies in the win was their 15 offensive rebounds.
