ELAC wrestling gets several individual wins at South Duals

SAN MARCOS, CA — The state’s No. 14-ranked East Los Angeles College wrestling team was eliminated in the consolation bracket of the South Duals, but not before several individual Huskies won matches.

No. 1 Cerritos College won the team championship with a 21-15 win over No. 5 Mt. San Antonio College. Host and No. 3 Palomar College took third place with a 39-9 win over No. 9 Santa Ana College.

Freshman Brandon Sotomayor (Bakersfield Centennial High School), No. 4-ranked in the state in the 285-pound division, improved to 11-1 overall. Heavyweight teammate freshman Daniel Pena improved to 4-1.

No. 6 sophomore Alex Contreras (Montclair HS) improved to 5-4 on the season in the 133-pound weight division.

Freshman Marcus Phillips (Crater HS, WA) won a key decision in a 22-18 loss to No. 10 Rio Hondo College. At the time, Phillips’ win gave the Huskies a 12-6 lead against the Roadrunners.


Individual Results (includes statewide rankings):

 125 pounds – Freshman Martin Gevorkian (Downey HS) won his bout in the Rio Hondo match while sophomore Joshua Garcia (San Fernando HS) had a tougher draw and lost to No. 10 Anthony Torres of Mt. SAC.

133 pounds – Contreras split two decisions, the latter a 7-3 win over Reyes of Rio Hondo after opening with a loss to No. 4 Roy Galvan of Mt. SAC.

149 pounds –Phillips won a 5-4 decision versus Rio Hondo freshman Josh Caro. Sophomore Marco Ramirez (Norwalk HS) lost to No. 2 Joseph Dominguez of Mt. SAC.

157 pounds – Freshmen Michael Estrada (John Glenn HS) and Doroteo Lopez (CC Valencia HS) each lost matches.

165 pounds – Honorable Mention-ranked in the 174-pound division, sophomore Max Velez (Schurr HS) lost in a 165-pound weight class match. He wrestled in this weight division for the first time this season. Velez is 7-6 in the 174-pound division. Estrada, who wrestled up a weight class in this division at 165-pounds, lost a 10-4 decision to Rio Hondo freshman Chris Martin (Mayfair HS), who also wrestled up a weight class. 

174 pounds – Honorable Mention-ranked in the 184-pound division, freshman Gabriel Rodriguez (Warren HS), who wrestled in this weight class for the first time this year, lost both matches. He is 7-7 in the 184-pound division.

184 pounds –Sophomore Brandon Aviles (Downey HS) won his third match in his third straight tournament, a 7-5 decision vs. Rio Hondo freshman Richard Sanjenis (Gabrielino HS). Freshman Steven Morones (John Glenn HS) lost to No. 5-ranked Freddie Garcia of Mt. SAC. It is the first time this year that Morones wrestled in this weight division.

197 pounds – Freshman Ricardo Cortez (Warren HS) won by forfeit. Freshman Oscar Martinez (Paramount HS) lost a 4-0 decision to No. 4 Rio Hondo freshman Andrew Ramos (Mayfair HS).

285 pounds –Sotomayor won a 4-1 decision against a Rio Hondo opponent and Pena won in an upset, a 4-3 overtime decision against Mt. SAC freshman Joshua Sapien (Bishop Amat HS).
