LEMOORE, CA — The East Los Angeles College Huskies edged No. 16 San Joaquin Delta College for 13th place in the 2016 West Hills College Invitational Wrestling Tournament that included 18 teams. The No. 11 Huskies struggled and upset by three lower ranked teams.
Cerritos College won the team title; ELAC conference rivals Bakersfield and West Hills colleges placed 5th and 6th, respectively.
ELAC freshman Efren Velez (Schurr High School) placed fifth in the 197 division, which was the individual best results for the Huskies. He opened with a 7-3 decision win (Thodos/Skyline College) and followed with a 4-1 loss to Bakersfield’s Zackary Mitchell who placed third overall in this weight class.
Efren Velez then won two decisions, 6-1 (Welbourn/Santa Rosa College) and 6-2 (Gray/Sacramento City College). He lost a 6-3 decision in the third place semifinals to Vincent Estus of San Joaquin Delta. Velez won the fifth place match with an 8-5 decision vs. Rio Hondo College’s Richard Sanjenis.
Other ELAC Individual Highlights:
125 pounds – Sophomore Joshua Garcia was a top-10 winner with his best tournament results of the year. He wrestled to three wins all by fall (Villeda/West Hills and Crespo/Chabot College and Munoz/San Joaquin Delta).
133 pounds – Freshman Martin Gevorkian (Downey Columbus HS), lost a tough 7-5 decision (Martinez/Rio Hondo).
141 pounds – Sophomore Alex Contreras (Montclair HS) was a Top-10 finisher. He won two decisions, an 8-3 win (Anaya/West Hills) and a 6-5 win (Warf/Chabot).
149 pounds – Sophomore Jonathan Mandujano (Monrovia HS) was a Top-10 finisher and wrestled 3-2 for the day with wins by fall (Iniguez/West Hills), a 6-3 decision (Vasquez/San Joaquin Delta) and a 10-4 decision (Caro/Rio Hondo).
149 pounds – Marcus Phillips (Spokane, WA / John R. Rogers HS) wrestled to his best results of the season and went 2-2 overall for the day with a 7-3 decision win (Hall/Shasta College) and a stunning 16-0 technical fall (Teitlebaum/Mt. San Antonio College) to quiet the Mounties.
157 pounds –Freshman Doroteo Lopez (CC Valencia HS) won by fall (Apreza/Cuesta College).
165 pounds – Freshman Christopher Sandoval (Bell Gardens HS) returned to action and came up on the short end of a 7-2 decision (Jauregui/Lassen College).
184 pounds – Freshman Gabriel Rodriguez (Warren HS) placed in the Top-10 with first and second round pins, winning by fall (Pfau/Sacramento City and Martin Franco/Fresno City College).
184 pounds – Sophomore Brandon Aviles (Downey HS) placed in the Top-10 a 4-3 decision win (Williams/San Joaquin Delta).
