ELAC women’s soccer defeats West Valley 2-1

VENTURA CA — The East Los Angeles College Huskies women’s soccer team won 2-1 against West Valley College of Saratoga, California at the Nike Soccer Community College Showcase held at Ventura College.

It was the first win of the season for the Huskies after three tries.

“We built off the momentum of the last game. As a team we finished strong,” said ELAC sophomore midfielder Jenny Trejo (Hollywood High School).

The Huskies previously lost to two top-five teams, 3-0 against Santa Barbara City College in the Nike Showcase and 6-1 to Santiago Canyon College in the season opener.

Sophomore midfielder Jennifer Toledo (Bravo Medical Magnet HS). scored ELAC’s lone goal in the Santiago Canyon game, unassisted, in the 38th minute.

The Huskies tried a lot of different players against West Valley, took risks and it paid off.  ELAC scored first with an unassisted goal from sophomore forward Stephanie Galvan (El Rancho High School).

West Valley countered with a goal, also in the first half, from Katie Bonvicino (assist Jasmine Gonzalez). The score was deadlocked at the half 1-1.

East Los Angeles broke the tie in the 86th minute with a goal from Galvan off a perfect assist from sophomore midfielder Jennifer Toledo (Bravo Medical Magnet HS).

The Huskies and the Vikings each attempted six shots on goals.

ELAC freshman goalkeeper Julia Rivera (Schurr High School) saved five shots.

West Valley goalkeeper Samantha Coelho saved four.

The Huskies took 13 shots against West Valley, five from Toledo and three each from Galvan and sophomore midfielder Vanessa Marin (Downey HS).  Freshman midfielder Teresa Ortega (Jordan HS) blasted two shots.

ELAC’s next game is on the road at San Bernardino Valley College (2-1) on Friday Sept. 15 at 6 p.m.

ELAC (1-2) hosts Ventura College (2-2) on Tuesday Sept. 19 at Weingart Stadium with a start time of 4 p.m.

San Bernardino Valley lost to Santa Barbara City College 3-0. According to the California Community College Soccer Coaches Association, San Bernardino Valley plays the toughest schedule in the state.
