LONG BEACH—In a South Coast Conference double-dual meet, the swimming team defeated Long Beach City College and lost a squeaker to Mt. San Antonio College in the last meet of the regular season.
The upset bid against Mt. SAC fell short, but not without a fight. “Against Mt. SAC, we started out the meet with a relay win and held the lead till about half way,” said ELAC Head Coach Erik Matheson “After that, the lead bounced back and forth then came down to the final relay, which we couldn’t pull off in the end.”
With the crowd and teams loudly rooting for their respective teams, Mt. SAC’s “A” and “B” relay teams swept the top two spots in the 400-yard freestyle relay followed by third place Long Beach. The ELAC “A” team of freshmen Brandy Macias and Wendy Centeno as well as sophomores Carmen Portillo and Yvonne Young placed fourth.
“Even though we won nine of the (meet’s) 15 events, the depth and distance events of the Mt. SAC squad took the final standings,” said Matheson.
In the Long Beach win, ELAC won the first event with the Vikings taking second place.
Winning the opening 200-medley relay was the ELAC “A” team of All-American sophomores Wenning Shen and Alice Fei Zhang, sophomore Beisi Li and freshman Ameyali Martinez.
The ELAC “B” team took third place—freshmen Ashley Alfaro, Alex Reyes, Julia Soto and Sarina Almengor.
Against Long Beach, “yet again we started out the meet with a relay win but this time kept the lead the entire meet. We won every event except the 1000-yard freestyle, 500-yard free and 4 x 100-yard free relay,” said Matheson. Other ELAC final results include:
