TORRANCE, CA — The Huskies women’s track and field team is tied for fourth place after Day 1 of the South Coast Conference Championships held today at the newly-built Murdock Stadium.
East Los Angeles College is tied for fourth place with Long Beach City College 19 points behind El Camino College who is in third place. Cerritos College is in first, after the first of two days of competition.
Freshman Sylvia Calvache (Rancho Mirage High School) competed in her first 10,000-meter run of the season. In an amazing finish, she crossed the tape in 43:35.98, good enough for a 7th place nod over a Mt. SAC sophomore by almost a minute. Calvache made the winner’s podium, the first for a Husky in a several years in an initial run in the event.
Freshman Yesenia Carias (Los Angeles HS) ran her fourth personal record, third in a row, in the 800-meter run. She placed eighth in 3:07.36.
Freshman Cameron Chang (South Pasadena HS) ended her season with a personal record in the 400-meter hurdles. She placed last, in 11th place, but ended the year on a high note. She improved through the season with three personal records in the event. She also ran a personal record in the 200-meter dash in March, but she didn’t compete in the event today.
Freshman Jazmin Romero (Roosevelt HS) placed ninth in the 800-meter run today in 3:04.74 just ahead of freshman Indira Acosta (Marc and Eva Stern Math and Science HS) who competed in her first meet this season.
Freshman Daisy Ortiz, one of the top runners of the Husky team, is injured and cannot compete in the SCC Championships.
The SCC Championship Finals will be on Friday, April 27 at El Camino College’s Murdock Stadium beginning at 1:00 p.m.
Calvache, who ran in the 10,000 Championship final, advanced to finals of the 5,000-meter run. Carias will be the 8th-seed in the 800-run finals. Romero also moves on to the 800 finals and is seeded ninth. A sixth-place finish for Carias or Romero will give them a bid to the SoCal Championships.
