OCEANSIDE, CA — It took the No. 6-ranked team in the state, Mira Costa College, to end East Los Angeles College’s 5-game win streak with a 25-17, 25-17, 25-20 Spartan win in the Mira Costa Quad mini-like tournament nightcap.

Mira Costa extended its win streak to 11.

The Huskies, 5-4 overall in non-conference play, defeated Glendale Community College (1-9) 25-21, 25-14, 25-22 in the Quad’s first matchup.

Against Mira Costa in the first set, the Huskies had six errors to just one for the Spartans, whose almost error-free play was the difference in the Huskies coming up short.

In the third set, the Huskies had only one error to seven for the Spartans, but Mira Costa’s offense was unstoppable with 17 kills to seven for ELAC.

ELAC had 23 total kills to Mira Costa’s 34. ELAC freshman middle hitter Esther Duru (.368, Lynwood HS) and Spartan sophomore outside hitter Lana Salazar each hit a game-high 10 kills.

ELAC sophomore outside hitter Angela Wade (Port of Los Angeles HS) had nine kills with a .455 clip. Duru hit a game-high six service aces and Wade had a team-high six digs.

Against Glendale, the Huskies took revenge from last year’s 3-2 loss with the sweep.

ELAC hit .315, its fifth straight match greater than .300.

In the first set, ELAC had 15 kills hitting .429 to Glendale’s four. ELAC followed with 12 kills in the second frame to eight for Glendale. In the third set ELAC outhit Glendale 14 kills to 4.

ELAC totaled a blistering 41 kills to 16 for Glendale. Duru hit a game-high 13 kills (.333). ELAC sophomore middle hitter Stephanie Landry (Montebello HS) smashed 12 kills with a .550 clip.

ELAC totaled a season-high 64 digs, with four Huskies in double figures. ELAC freshman middle hitter Jasmine Andres (Bell HS) had a game-high 15 digs. Teammate freshman outside hitter Julisa Leon (Orthopedic Medical Magnet HS) and Wade had 11 digs each.

ELAC freshman setter Taryn Higadera (Rosemead HS) added 10 digs, 32 assists and three blocked shots.

ELAC plays against the California Lutheran University junior varsity Regals on Wednesday Sept. 21 at 7 p.m. It is a rematch of a 3-2 Regals win in the Huskies season opener.
