ELAC volleyball sweeps LA Harbor in three

MONTEREY PARK, CA — The East Los Angeles College volleyball team won a 3-0 South Coast Conference crossover game against Los Angeles Harbor College.  

The Huskies improved to 11-9 overall and won its sixth-straight sweep against Harbor (8-8) in the last four years.

The Huskies outhit Harbor with a 29-21 edge in kills and a hitting percentage of .478. ELAC led in digs 49-6, service aces 14-10 and blocked shots 8-7.

Freshman middle hitter Kayla Dickerson (Bell Gardens High School) hit a game-high nine kills at a .727 clip and had a team-high three blocked shots.

Four Huskies each had a game-eight nine digs, sophomore setter Taryn Higareda (Rosemead HS), freshman libero Ashley Castillo (Garfield HS), freshman setter Aifili Tuita'u (Cajon HS) and freshman outside hitter Bela Gamboa (Downey HS).

Three Huskies each had three service aces—Gamboa, Higareda and freshman libero/defensive specialist Victoria Trejo (Downey HS). Castillo led the Huskies in assists with 11. Tuita'u had nine assists.

SET 1:  The set with four lead changes and then Harbor built leads of 8-5 and 12-9. ELAC tied it at 12-12 after a Gamboa kill. The teams battled to four more ties, the latter at 17-all. Gamboa smashed a kill and the Huskies led 18-17, a lead they would not relinquish. With ELAC leading 24-19, Harbor staved off the set point from a kill by KeShauna Miles. Dickerson then blocked a shot and the Huskies took set one, 25-20.

SET 2: After two ties, Harbor built a 5-3 lead. ELAC caught them at 7-7 off a kill from freshman outside hitter Yicel Quintero (South Gate HS). A bi later, Trejo connected on two consecutive aces and ELAC led 10-8. The Huskies went on a 7-2 run and led 17-10 off a Gamboa kill. ELAC went on an 8-3 run then Quintero closed out the set with an ace and ELAC won it 25-13.

SET 3: Down 1-0, Harbor’s Carissa Yamanish served three-straight aces and Harbor led 3-1. Harbor built leads of 8-3 and 11-6. ELAC followed with a 7-3 run and tied the score at 13-13. Three ties later, sophomore outside hitter Miranda Moisa (Downey HS) pounded a kill and ELAC had its third lead of the game 19-18. Moisa served and ace to reach set point at 24-19. After a long rally, Harbor hit the ball out of bounds and ELAC won the set 25-19 and the match 3-0 (25-20, 25-13, 25-19).

The Huskies have four games remaining in the regular season, all SCC matchups,  beginning with a game at Mt. SAC on Nov. 1 at 6 p.m.
