Water Polo gives Mt. SAC a battle

WALNUT,CA — The East Los Angeles College water polo team faced its toughest test of the season today and came home with a hard-fought 15-8 loss to Mt. San Antonio College.

The Mounties remain undefeated in the South Coast Conference (3-0) while ELAC falls to 0-3.

For two periods, the teams played evenly matched. During that time, ELAC had six leads to one for Mt. SAC while the teams tied six times. Mt. SAC regrouped and outscored ELAC 7-0 in the third quarter.

ELAC, which plays its best ball in the final quarter, outscored Mt. SAC 3-1 in the fourth. The Huskies have scored 18 of their 40 goals this season during the fourth quarter.

ELAC opened the score with a blast from freshman defender Cynthia Sanchez (Schurr High School), assisted by freshman attacker Sophia Gonzalez (Harvard Westlake HS), for a 1-0 lead 00:21 seconds into the game.  Mt. SAC tied it at 1-1 with 5:58 left of the period.

The Huskies scored six seconds later with a goal from freshman center Jessenia Barberena (Mark Keppel HS) assisted by Gonzalez.

Mt. SAC sophomore captain Hannah Krolik tied the game at 2-2 seconds later on a pass from sophomore attacker Beth Keane (Corona HS).

The Huskies led 4-3 after the first period. Other ELAC goals during this time were from Gonzalez (unassisted) and freshman attacker Elsie Morales (Bell Gardens HS), assisted by Gonzalez, with five seconds remaining in the period.

Mt. SAC outscored ELAC 4-2 in the second period and took a 7-6 lead with one second left off an unassisted goal by sophomore attacker Elizabeth Keane (Corona HS).

Second period ELAC goals were from Sanchez (assisted by Gonzalez) and Barberena (assisted by Gonzalez).

Gonzalez scored two unassisted goals in the fourth period. She scored a team-high three goals. Two Huskies scored two goals each, Barberena and Sanchez. Morales added one goal to the ELAC total.

Sophomore goalkeeper Krystal Ramirez (Montebello HS) had 10 saves for the Huskies.

The Huskies had eight steals, four from Gonzales, two from Morales and one each from Sanchez and sophomore attacker Julia Soto (Garfield HS).

The Huskies host two games next week, Long Beach City College (3-0 in SCC play) on Wednesday, Sept. 28 at 3 p.m. and Mt. San Antonio College on Friday, Sept. 30 at 3:30 p.m
