ELAC softball defeats Orange Coast College 5-2
MONTEREY PARK, CA — The East Los Angeles College softball team stopped an Orange Coast College rally then scored two insurance runs in a 5-2 victory in front of a raucous home crowd today.
ELAC led 3-1 after three innings.
The Orange Coast rally took place in the top of the fifth after two outs. Linnea Donahugh tripled. Teammate and first baseman Cayla Ezelle doubled (RBI).
ELAC’s lead was trimmed to 3-2 and Orange Coast had the momentum.
With the fans from both teams vocal and Ezelle in scoring position, ELAC freshman pitcher Samantha Alvarado got Orange Coast third baseman Nala Osorio to fly out. The Huskies stopped the rally and took back the momentum.
In the bottom of the inning, ELAC scored a run from two singles. Freshman left fielder Angelina Gonzalez singled off her first swing and first baseman Andrea Rocha blasted a single to right field.
The Huskies led 4-2 after five. ELAC added another insurance run in the bottom of the sixth.
Orange Coast scored a run in the top of the first inning top open the score with a 1-0 lead. The Huskies scored two runs in the bottom of the second with help from two Orange Coast errors.
Alvarado (7-3) recorded the win. She pitched all seven innings and threw two strikes. Alvarado has 37 strikes this season.
Gonzalez had two of ELAC’s five hits, with one double. Husky singles were from Rocha, sophomore designated pitcher Madalyn Roberts, who has a batting average of .400, and freshman infielder Jazmine Ayala.
Freshman short stop Mone't Manning had an RBI and a stole her second base of the season.
The Huskies, 12-10 overall and 0-2 in the South Coast Conference North Division, host two more games this week.
ELAC continues SCC North play with a night game against Chaffey College (9-12, 1-0) on Thursday, March 16 at 5 p.m.
ELAC hosts LA Valley College (0-12) in a non-conference game on Friday March 17 at 1:00 p.m.
