ELAC softball comes close against No. 4
WALNUT, CA — The East Los Angeles College softball team held the No. 4-ranked team in the state to a 1-1 all tie through 5 1/2 innings, but lost 3-1 to Mt. San Antonio College in front of a large crowd.
In the South Coast Conference game, Mt. SAC rallied for two runs, in the bottom of the fifth inning and cut short an ELAC rally in the sixth for the win.
The Huskies (16-21 overall) scored first, in the top of the second inning and led 1-0. Mt. SAC (30-3) tied it in the third, 1-1.
The Huskies were outhit 9-5. Mt. SAC’s nine hits included three doubles and a home run.
ELAC sophomore pitcher Griselda Vasquez pitched the distance. She belted a home run, which was also ELAC’s only RBI.
The Huskies other four hits were from freshman first baseman Samantha Alvarado who singled twice, freshman short stop Angelina Gonzalez who singled as did third baseman Andrea Rocha who has a batting average of .430.
In other action, the Huskies recently ended up on the short end of three one-run losses in South Coast Conference play; 5-4 to Rio Hondo College in 10 innings, 5-4 to Pasadena City College and 12-11 to Chaffey College.
ELAC outhit Rio Hondo 12-11, rallied in the top of the 10th to take a 4-3 lead, but couldn’t hold on. Top Husky hits aga were from freshman left fielder Nicole Zamora who singled four times. Vasquez and freshman Destiny Avena who each singled twice and each had an RBI.
In the loss to Chaffey, Gonzalez hit two doubles and singled; three Huskies had singled twice, Alvarado (2 RBIs), Rocha (2 RBIs) and Avena (RBI). Huskies who each singled included, sophomore pinch hitter Madalyn Roberts (RBI), freshman catcher Sandra Vargas (RBI), Vasquez and Natalie Acosta.
The Huskies end their season with three home games, each with 5 p.m. start times. Tomorrow, ELAC hosts Rio Hondo (10-25); hosts Chaffey (14-19) on Thursday, April 20, and Rio Hondo in the final game of the season on Tuesday, April 25.
